Prayers in the bible that God answered

By JesusH_Admin Oct4,2024

Introduction to Answered Prayers in the Bible

The Bible is filled with stories that demonstrate the power of prayer in the lives of believers. These stories not only strengthen our faith, but they also offer valuable lessons on how we should approach God in prayer. Throughout Scripture, we see how various biblical figures brought their requests to God and received answers, sometimes in unexpected ways. Studying these examples can strengthen our relationship with the Lord and improve our prayer life.

Examples of Answered Prayers in the Old Testament

1. Abraham Intercedes for Sodom (Genesis 18:16-33)

Abraham, known as God’s friend, boldly interceded for the city of Sodom. Despite the city’s wickedness, Abraham approached God and asked if He would destroy the city if there were 50 righteous people. God responded that He would not destroy it for those 50 righteous. Abraham continued his intercession until he reached 10 righteous, and God confirmed that for those 10, He would not destroy the city. This act of intercession highlights the importance of persistent and fervent prayer.

2. Hannah Asks for a Son (1 Samuel 1:9-20)

Hannah, who was deeply distressed because she couldn’t have children, poured out her soul before the Lord in the temple. In her great sorrow, she promised to dedicate her child to God’s service if He granted her request. God heard Hannah’s prayers and gave her a son, Samuel, who became one of Israel’s greatest prophets. This story teaches us about sincerity and total surrender in prayer.

3. Joshua and the Sun Standing Still (Joshua 10:12-14)

In an act of bold faith, Joshua prayed for the sun and moon to stand still during a critical battle, and God answered his prayer. This miracle allowed Israel to gain a complete victory over their enemies. Joshua’s prayer underscores the power of bold and confident prayer when aligned with God’s will.

Examples of Answered Prayers in the New Testament

1. Zechariah’s Prayer (Luke 1:13)

Zechariah, a righteous priest, and his wife Elizabeth had been praying for a child for years. Despite their old age, God answered their prayers by sending the angel Gabriel to announce the birth of John the Baptist. This event teaches us that no request is too difficult for God and that He works according to His perfect timing.

2. Jesus’ Prayer in Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-44)

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus experienced deep anguish as He faced crucifixion. He prayed earnestly, asking if it was possible for this cup (suffering) to pass from Him. Yet, He ended each request by accepting the Father’s will over His own. This account teaches us the importance of submitting to God’s will in our prayers.

3. Saul’s Conversion (Acts 9:1-19)

Saul, later known as the apostle Paul, had a dramatic conversion while traveling to Damascus. His experience highlights how even unspoken prayers, like the desire for knowledge and truth, can be powerfully answered by God. Saul’s transformation shows that God can change the hardest of hearts and use them for His divine purposes.

Lessons on Prayer

1. Persistence in Prayer

As seen in Abraham’s intercession and Hannah’s constant request, a common characteristic of answered prayers is persistence. The message is clear: we should not get discouraged or stop praying, even if the answer takes time to come.

2. Aligning with God’s Will

While it’s natural to want our requests to be answered just as we ask, full surrender and alignment with God’s will, as shown by Jesus in Gethsemane, are essential. Recognizing that God has a better plan and that His timing is perfect helps us align our prayers with His will.

3. Faith and Trust in God

Effective prayer is rooted in faith and trust in God. Joshua trusted in God’s power to stop the sun and moon. When we pray, we must firmly believe that God is able to do the impossible and will act in our best interest.

Conclusion

The stories of answered prayers in the Bible teach us precious lessons about how to approach God and trust in His sovereignty. They encourage us to be persistent, faithful, and submissive in our prayer life, always seeking God’s glory above all else. Like the biblical characters, we can experience God’s power in our lives when we approach Him with a sincere heart and unwavering faith.
